APPLICATION NOTE: COMPRESSION MOLDING
GLASS SELECTION

SI Veils and light weight reinforcements are engineered for the higher pressures of Compression Molding applications. Their electrical properties and corrosion resistance characteristics make them ideal for various applications. Veil is used on surface parts for outstanding finishes or in thin profiles. Widths are to customer’s specifications, allowing for less waste and lower manufacturing costs. Binder range percentages may also be specified, giving the designer greater flexibility.

Typically, Pearlveil-110 (Series 100 Binder), 20 Mil is used on the surface, while Pearlveil-110, ½ ounce may provide reinforcement in thin profiles. For complex shapes consider either Curveil-110 or Flexiveil-110. See Technical Data Sheets for options.
FEATURES:

SI Veils offer many features for Compression Molding applications.
  Excellent wet-out,
  Excellent electrical insulation properties,
  Excellent resistance to fiber wash,
Long length rolls, reducing number of rolls in inventory,
  Custom specified binder range percentage,
Highly corrosion resistant under acidic conditions,
Contaminant free, making it safe for RTM/VIP,
White in color, making it transparent in the finished part, and
Glass is easily sanded for smooth part finishing.
OVERVIEW:

Both hot and cold Liquid Compression Molding are Closed Mold Process’s in which reinforcements are placed between two matched, heated, steel mold surfaces.  Theres in can be either hand poured into the mold cavity or injected after the mold is closed. Typically, large presses are utilized with higher internal pressures than conventional RTM.

This process lends itself to larger and more complex shaped parts. Tooling is more expensive. Compression Molding is typically used for higher production requirements.

The advantage in both processes is when large volume production runs are required. Finished parts include automotive door panels and bumpers, composite tractor fenders, hoods and cooling fan shields.
